Learn the facts about sign language.
Sign language is not universal! In Canada, American Sign Language (ASL) and Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) are recognized as the primary languages of Deaf people.
Keep your messaging clear and simple.
Ensure all written materials are easy to read and understand. Use plain language and clear formatting to avoid confusion. Add pictures and visual aids where possible.
Provide your customers with written communication options.
Offer a pen and paper, email, text or instant messaging.
Ask about communication preferences.
While some of your customers might prefer written communication, others might be more comfortable using sign language. Let your customer lead you to the best approach.
Use professional sign language interpreters.
Whether in-person or virtual through Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), a qualified sign language interpreter can make all the difference in your meetings or events.
Address the person you’re speaking to.
When using an interpreter, speak directly to the Deaf person, not the interpreter.
Work with Canadian sign language interpreters.
Prevent misunderstandings. Work with interpreters who are familiar with various regional and provincial dialects of American Sign Language (ASL) and langue des signes québécoises (LSQ).
Use captioning and translation.
Captions are useful in helping non-native English speakers develop better English skills but if someone’s primary language is ASL or LSQ, then sign language is more accessible for them. That’s why we recommend captions AND sign language translation. Having both ensures your content is accessible to the Deaf community.
Train your team.
Provide regular training for your employees on Deaf culture and effective communication strategies to foster an inclusive environment.
Ask the Deaf community for feedback.
